Difference Between iPhone X And iPhone XR

Choosing a smartphone is never an easy task, but with newer products being launched by Apple — one of the market leaders in the realm of smartphones and gadgets — every single year to keep up with the ever-changing technological advancements, the process can get even more overwhelming. In 2017, the company launched its flagship product — the iPhone X — which was seen as a significant departure from what Apple had been offering for the past few years before that. This was also the most expensive iPhone that had been launched until then.

The following year, in addition to the iPhone XS — which was a step up from the iPhone X — the company also launched the iPhone XR, a fun product that grabbed the attention of many people across the world because of the attractive pricing and features offered. At the same time, the price of the iPhone X also fell significantly, putting many potential buyers in a state of confusion over whether they should opt for the iPhone X or the iPhone XR. If you identify with this group of people and are wondering how both these fantastic smartphones fare when pitted against each other, this guide that outlines the difference between the models may be very helpful for you!

Design Of iPhone X And iPhone XR

The first main point of difference between the iPhone X and the iPhone XR is the design. First, the iPhone X has a 5.8-inch (or 14.73 cm) screen. It has a thickness of 7.7 mm, a width of 70.9 mm and a height of 143.6 mm. It weighs 174 grams, which is fairly impressive for a large smartphone.

The iPhone XR, on the other hand, has a 6.1-inch (15.49 cm) screen, which is a little larger than the iPhone X, but as you will understand after looking at the display quality, that is not necessarily a positive thing. It has a thickness of 8.3 mm, a width of 75.7 mm and a height of 150.9 mm. As the dimensions increase with the iPhone XR, so does the weight, albeit not too significantly with the phone weighing 194 grams.

The iPhone X and iPhone XR both have glass shells, but the former also has an impressive surgical-grade stainless steel band around the edges. With the iPhone XR, the company has switched out the stainless steel band with a Series 7000 aluminum one to cut down the costs.

Display

iPhone Display Comparison

If the display is one of the main concerns that you have when it comes to smartphones, iPhone X is clearly the winner in this realm. With a pixel density of 458 pixels per inch, the iPhone X’s display is sure to wow you with the depth, intensity, and clarity. In addition to this, the iPhone X employs the OLED display technology, which allows the colors on the screen to really pop.

While the iPhone XR does not have a bad display, it does seem a little dull when compared to the iPhone X. One major reason for this is that the phone’s display only has a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. The other major reason for the lower display quality on the iPhone XR is that it has an LCD display instead of the OLED one mentioned earlier that is found on the iPhone X. This means that the colors will now enamor you as much with this.

iPhone X vs. iPhone XR Camera

With the iPhone X, you will be getting a 12-megapixel + 12-megapixel dual-camera system at the rear end. This includes a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens, which gave Apple users the best quality of pictures when compared to any of the earlier iPhones. The device also supports optical image stabilization (OIS), quad-LED ‘True Tone” flash, and multiple shooting modes, including Continuous Shooting, high dynamic range mode (HDR) and Burst mode.

While the iPhone XR also has all the OIS, True Tone flash and multiple shooting modes, the company was able to keep the costs lower with this model by including a single 12-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens on this smartphone variant. This means that you can still continue to get your pictures in Portrait mode with the iPhone XR, which was one of the major selling points for the iPhone X when it was first released.

Both phones have a 7-megapixel front camera.

Performance Of iPhone X And iPhone XR

In terms of performance, the iPhone XR may have the upper hand, as it is powered by a Hexa-core Apple A12 Bionic processor, which is the same one that is used by iPhone X’s successor, the iPhone XS. This has led to a significant improvement in terms of performance when compared to the Apple A11 Bionic processor that is used by the iPhone X. This does not mean that the iPhone X does not offer impressive performance, but the iPhone XR is definitely the superior option here with faster LTE and dual SIM capabilities, which are discussed in greater detail later.

Rather than sticking to the regular color options that Apple provides for the iPhone X, XS, and other flagship smartphones, the iPhone XR is available in a wide range of colors, including bright blue and red, which means that if you are tired of the metal shades, there is something new available for you. Finally, both the phones do offer protection against water and dust with the IP67 rating.

Battery Life and Charging

When it comes to battery life, the iPhone XR does have more to offer. For example, it may even be able to last 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 8 Plus. This is of great significance, as the iPhone 8 Plus offers a marginally better battery performance than the iPhone X. While greater innovation may be one of the reasons for this, the difference in displays and resolution plays a significant role in this regard. There have been cases where the iPhone XR battery has been considered even better than the iPhone XS Max, because of this display difference.

Both the iPhone X and the iPhone XR offer wireless charging, which is a relatively newer addition to Apple’s smartphones. However, you must keep in mind that you will have to buy the wireless charger separately, as it is not included in the packaging. Regardless, it makes for a spiffy new addition to the Apple smartphones.

Storage

iPhone Storage

First, it is important to note that as is the case with all Apple’s smartphones, both iPhone X and iPhone XR do not have expandable memories. Both the phones start with basic models that are 64 GB in terms of storage. With the iPhone X, there is only one other variant available, which is the 256 GB one. In terms of storage, the iPhone XR will give you more options, as it does offer the middle tier 128 GB variant as well, in addition to the 64 GB and 256 GB variants.

One major change that has been brought about with the iPhone XR is that it has dual SIM capabilities, which was not the case with the earlier models like the iPhone X. The compatibility, however, is a little limited, as the second SIM has to be an eSIM. Regardless, when most other smartphone companies are making provisions for two SIMs, this seems like a step in the right direction for Apple.

Price Comparison Of iPhone X And iPhone XR

Price comparison Of Both iPhones

While the iPhone X was launched at a starting price of $999 for the 64 GB variant, which was the highest than an Apple smartphone was priced at until then, the price has dropped significantly in the two years that followed. This means that it is possible for you to get hold of the iPhone X at almost the same price that you would pay for an iPhone XR, which will be discussed in greater detail now. Keep in mind that you will not be able to get your hands on this through the official Apple website anymore.

Launched at a relatively high base price of $749 for the most basic variant in 2018, the price of the iPhone XR has also dropped significantly after newer models were launched by Apple in the year that followed. Starting at $599 for the basic 64 GB variant, the iPhone XR is a good option for people who want to more efficient A12 Bionic chipset and better battery life.

Even though the iPhone X was launched a year earlier than the iPhone XR, it still has a better quality display. Offering good performance and an impressive camera, if you don’t mind going in for an older model, iPhone X still packs a punch and makes for a fantastic smartphone. On the other hand, while the iPhone XR may not have the best display out there, it does come with a power-efficient A12 Bionic chipset, good camera as well as a battery life that will not get drained at the speed of lightning. Both models are feature-heavy, but the final decision that you take will have to be based on your individual needs and the features that hold more importance for you!
